Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) treatment

Chinese Herbs can effectively treat the root cause of IBS, leading to long lasting relief from this stubborn condition.
OVERVIEW
A study published in the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA. 1998;280:1585-1589. Bensousan et al.) compared Chinsese herbs with placebo in the treatment of IBS. The results were that patients taking Chinese herbs had significant improvement in symptoms, and that treatment with Chinese herbs "significantly reduced the degree of interference with life caused by IBS symptoms." Another interesting outcome was that upon retesting 14 weeks after completion of treatment, the Chinese herbs group still maintained the improvement. This confirms that if the root of the illness is treated, the results are long lasting.
HERBAL TREATMENT FOR IBS
Irritable Bowel Syndrome presents with a constellation of uncomfortable symptoms such as urgent diarrhea, constipation, bloating, gas and reactivity to common foods. Stress and emotional constraint aggravate this condition. TCM uses compound herbal formulas of 10 - 12 herbs to normalize the smooth muscle contractions of the bowels, assist in the absorption and assimilation of food, decongest the liver and gall bladder, and relieve stress.

ASTHMA & Allergies

Chinese herbs are at the forefront of research into asthma and allergies treatments. A study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, (2005 Jan;115(1):171-8) found a Chinese herbal combination to be as effective as steroid treatment in the management of asthma symptoms, but without the side effects.

TCM TREATMENT
Allergic asthma is on a steady rise in children, along with food and environmental allergies. These are conditions of immune disregulation and abnormal reactivity to benign substances. TCM employs a large arsenal of immune regulating protocols and herbal formulas to treat asthma, allergic rhinitis and food allergies.

Headache & Migraine treatment

Migraine headaches affect up to 18% of women and 6% of men. They can be disabling to one's enjoyment of life as well as ability to work. While modern drugs do offer some welcome relief of symptoms, they are not able to treat the root of the problem and prevent its recurrence.

TCM TREATMENT
One of the main herbs used in TCM for headaches and migraines is Rz. Ligusticii Wallichi, aka Chuan Xiong. It is the subject of a great deal of neurological and other research on PubMed, for example: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30013473/.  In TCM clinics, Chuan xiong is combined with other herbs according to the specific signs and symptoms of each patient. In a nutshell, the aim of TCM treatment for headache and migraine is to restore proper circulation of blood and energy to the head, according to the old medical proverb "where there is free flow, there is no pain."

Other conditions

IBD - Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis
These gastrointestinal conditions are known as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).

The gastrointestinal mucosa becomes inflamed and ulcerated, leading to symptoms such as severe, frequent diarrhea, bleeding, mucus and pain. IBD can significantly affect quality of life as well as long-term health. Western medicine offers drug management, and if that fails, surgery to remove the diseased part of the colon.

Chinese Herbal Medicine is exceptional at treating IBD, especially Colitis.  Symptoms often improve within the first 3 weeks, with progressive improvement over several months of treatment. Patients can reasonably expect long-term remission. Once the herbal treatment is completed and all symptoms have gone, it is not necessary to continue taking herbs or drugs, as the intestinal lining is now healed.

A double blind study published in the Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine (1994 Jul;14(7):400-2) treated 153 patients suffering from intractable ulcerative colitis. Patients were divided into three groups. One group was treated with a Chinese herbal formula in pill form and Chinese herbal enemas. The second group was treated with the standard western drugs sulfasalazine and steroids - orally and by enema. The third group was treated with a placebo and a herbal enema. After 3 months, the Chinese herb group was 53.1% symptom free and an additional 32.8% improved. The western drugs group was 27.7% symptom free and 21.9% improved, while the placebo group was 19 % symptom free and 26.2% improved.

These are dramatic results, especially if we consider a few points. In a TCM clinical setting, ulcerative colitis would be treated much longer than 3 months, and up to one year. This would give many of the improved patients the likelihood of a permanent cure. Secondly, while the Western treatment may initially be effective when steroids are used, these are not feasible as a long-term treatment due to side effects, and over time their results can be expected to decline.

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS
RA is a chronic and sometimes crippling auto-immune disorder. Western medicine treats it with immune-suppressive drugs that have many severe side effects, including damage to the liver.

Chinese herbal medicine bases its treatment on a thousand year old herbal formula that has stood the test of time. This formula is modified as needed to suit the needs of the individual patient. For example, certain herbs are added if the upper body is affected, while others are used for the lower joints. After 6 weeks of treatment, the patient may consider slowly weaning off their Western drugs under the supervision of their physician. The herbal course of treatment continues until all symptoms are cleared, usually up to 1 year.
According to a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, use of a Chinese herb extract for 20 weeks showed therapeutic benefit in patients with rheumatoid arthritis refractory to standard Western drug treatment (Journal of Arthritis and Rheumatolgoy 2002 Jul;46(7):1735-43.)
FERTILITY TREATMENT
Traditional Chinese Medicine is a profoundly useful therapy to assist conception. It can play a main role as the only modality used, or a supportive role in conjunction with Assisted Reproduction Technologies (ART) procedures.
